A practical week of real-world tasks — planning a family meal, budgeting and comparing prices — scaled for each grade.
Grades 1–5 · 20–30 minutes a day · Free printable by THEO Homeschool
The THEO approach: THEO believes children are ready for more responsibility than we often give them. Real tasks with real stakes build competence, confidence and stewardship.
The challenge
Over one week, your child helps plan and prepare one simple family meal. Each day is one step.
Daily steps
| Day | Grades 1–2 | Grades 3–5 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 · Plan | Pick a meal from three choices you offer. | Choose a meal and list every ingredient. |
| 2 · Check | Look in the pantry with a parent for each item. | Mark what you have and write a shopping list. |
| 3 · Budget | Count coins to 'buy' one ingredient. | Estimate the cost, then compare two brands or sizes. |
| 4 · Prepare | Wash, stir and set the table. | Follow the recipe steps; measure ingredients. |
| 5 · Serve & reflect | Serve the family and say thank you. | Lead the clean-up and share what you'd change. |
Stewardship talk
Read 1 Corinthians 10:31 together. How can planning a meal be a way to serve God and our family?
