The THEO approach: Deuteronomy 6:7 describes teaching 'when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down and when you rise.' Learning happens best inside ordinary family life.
Start with what you already do
You don't need more time — you need to notice the learning hiding in your current day. Most families already cook, shop, clean, travel and talk. Each is a lesson waiting to be named.
Five everyday classrooms
| Everyday moment | Learning opportunity |
|---|---|
| Grocery store | Reading labels, comparing prices, estimating totals, making choices on a budget. |
| Kitchen | Fractions and measuring, following written steps, serving others. |
| Car rides | Scripture memory, audiobooks, 'I spy' with letters, map directions. |
| Chores | Responsibility, sequencing, finishing what you start. |
| Walks outside | Observing God's creation, sketching, asking 'why' questions. |
Three habits that make it stick
- Name it: “We just practiced fractions!” Children learn more when they know they're learning.
- Hand it over: let your child do the part you usually do — pay, read the recipe, give directions.
- Talk at bedtime: ask “What did you learn today that wasn't in a book?”
Give yourself grace
Some days will look more like school and some more like life. Both count. Faithfulness over many ordinary days matters more than any single perfect lesson.
